Isaiah 49:3,5-6; 1Corinthians 1:1-3; John 1:29-34

Last Sunday we celebrated the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, an event that confirmed the identity od Jesus as God’s “beloved Son” and marked the launch of his mission. Today, the second of Ordinary Time, our readings invite us to reflect on the identity and mission of Jesus and what it means to him as the chosen one of God.

In the opening reading, Isaiah presents the Lord’s servant and explains that God will receive honour and glory because of what this servant does. The servant is destined to free the people and serve as a light to all nations. This prophecy is fulfilled through Jesus. He is the universal saviour who takes away the sin of the world.

In the opening reading, Isaiah speaks about the servant of the Lord, explaining that God will receive honour and glory because of what this servant does.

In the second reading St. Paul addresses the Christian community in Corinth and encouraged them in the faith they had received through him. He reminded them that they are meant to join all the saints who pray to Jesus Christ. This privilege is not just for Christians in Corinth; it extends to all members of the wider community who acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord. Paul’s personal experience of Jesus calls us to centre our lives on Christ and deepen our knowledge of him.

The gospel narrates the moment when John the Baptist sees Jesus and recognizes him as the Lamb of God. This recognition is not just an acknowledgment of Jesus’ identity but serves as a profound testimony to the nature and mission of Jesus Christ. This testimony is not based on hearsay but on divine revelation and personal experience, as John says he saw the Spirit descend on Jesus. The description of Jesus as the Lamb of God, foreshadows his sacrificial death on the cross. His testimony provides an insight into the redemptive purpose of Jesus’ mission. It connects to the Jewish practice of offering lamb sacrifices for forgiveness and cleansing. Jesus takes on this role, offering himself as the ultimate sacrifice to redeem humanity from the burden of sin.

Our reflection this week is Who is Jesus? Do we see the fullness of God residing in Jesus, the Prophet of God, the Word of God made flesh among us, the pity and compassion of God touching and reaching out to us while calling us to the truth, to repent and to change in every area of our thoughts, ways and relationship? What Jesus are we witnesses to our time today? Let us build our lives on him. We pray that our Heavenly Father will pour His spirit into our hearts and help to imitate the example of John the Baptist and become clear and effective witnesses to Jesus Christ. May our words and actions never block, but always reflect the light of Christ, our Saviour.
